Introduction
The Ask the Mask
The Ask the Mask Project is a contemporary reinterpretation of Korean Talchum and Indonesian Topeng, presented as a dance drama. It draws its central narrative from the “Panji Romance” of Java and the “Cheoyong Tale” of Korea. Based on insights gained through research and workshops in 2023, the project modernizes the movements and storytelling elements of traditional masked theater.
The performance features newly crafted masks created by artisans from both Korea and Indonesia, along with “New Traditional” music that blends Korean traditional music and Gamelan. Utilizing interactive and immersive audiovisual technologies, the production creates an engaging and sensory-rich stage experience.
Through the integration of direction, choreography, music, and scenography, the project seeks to communicate with contemporary audiences. Its overarching goal is to reimagine the value of traditional arts from both countries while fostering sustainable cultural exchange and collaboration.
