PUJA, Modern Table
Modern Table (Korea) x Hands Percussion (Malaysia)
The work PUJA explores ritualistic dance and imagery, creating a new form of ceremony inspired by Malaysian dance, music, and spirit.
Introduction
Artistic director Kim Jae-duk is interested in ritualistic and ceremonial dance, and creates various images in choreography. Many such ritualistic synesthetic images can be found in recent choreographic works such as JE_UI (choreography by TanzLucerne, Switzerland) and BROWN (choreography by CCDC, Hong Kong). In the case of Malaysia, as an Islamic cultural sphere, there are various and abundant elements to research in terms of ritualistic aspects. Last year, through a planning project, we designed a new form of ritual (ceremony) such as Malaysian dance, music, and their spirit, and we plan to produce and perform the new work <PUJA>.
During the research period last year, while conducting music and dance mentoring, after discussing the direction of the work, we chose 'PUJA' as the title that best expresses this ritual. The dictionary term for PUJA is 'worship' in Korean, but it is said to be closer to 'ritual'.
