'Earthing' - Contemporary Dance Workshop
Company SIGA x Fanglao Dance Company
SangSangMaru conducts a Korea-Vietnam co-creation workshop for the family musical 'Troll's Child' with Youth Theatre of Vietnam. Through the joint workshop between Korea and Vietnam, the project aims to reinterpret the true meaning and value of modern families and to implement literary value on stage.
Organization
The Company SIGA
The Company SIGA began with the purpose of communicating and sympathising with our lives and people around us through their dancing. SIGA is an acronym which the company members coined using a Korean word, “시나브로[sinabro]”, and that means ‘little by little. Lee Jae-young, Ahn Ji-hyung, and Kwon Hyuk, those three choreographers are pursuing a group work style that puts diverse movements and thoughts of their own all together into one complete piece of art. In addition, they actively collaborate with artists of various genres to challenge new adventures for each piece of work and expand the spectrum of their dance "little by little".
FANGLAO (listening Laos)
FANGLAO (listening Laos) is a Vientiane-based dance company founded in 2013 by the dancers Noutnapha SOYDALA (President) and Ounla PHAOUDOM (director) to develop artistic and choreographic practices in Laos.
FANGLAO is the first collective experimenting, creating, and transmitting dance at the crossroads of traditional and contemporary culture in Laos. At the heart of its activities are the organization of courses, workshops, and training, as well as showcasing and exchanging dance practices by organizing cultural events, festivals, projects, and tours in Laos and abroad. Several other groups of young dancers regularly attend the company's workshops in Vientiane to train and participate in cultural projects organized by FANGLAO. Since 2015, the company has rented a "Black Box" space in Vientiane to organize regular training, workshops, performances, and artist residencies.
Project
Earthing
The work "Earthing" is a collaborative project between the South Korean contemporary dance group "Sinabro In the Chest" and the unique contemporary dance group "Fanglao Dance Company" from Laos. This project was initiated by Yuko Takeda, a former Festival Tokyo producer who is actively promoting international exchange projects across Asia beyond ASEAN. The primal yet stable artistic style of Sinabro In the Chest, their extensive project management expertise, and their combination of street dance with traditional dance have opened the door to the beginning of contemporary dance in Laos, which is boldly experimenting and challenging traditional boundaries, and will create great synergy in this project.
"Earthing" was produced in a final 50-minute stage performance and dance film version. They explored each other's movements through workshops while traveling between Korea and Laos and continued to develop and produce the work through ongoing online rehearsals. They completed the final presentation in Vientiane, Laos in December 2022 and released the dance film in early 2023.
*This Project awarded at The Second Seoul Arts Awards.
