Hybrid Hope : Shamanism and Technology

Studio S2 (KOREA) x Mythical Mode(INDONESIA)

The project Hybrid Hope: Shamanism and Technology brings together creative collectives from Indonesia and Korea, who have been working on history and memory, to learn and exchange ideas.

Introduction

The project Hybrid Hope: Shamanism and Technology brings together creative collectives from Indonesia and Korea, who have been working on history and memory, to learn and exchange ideas. It explores the relationship between shamanism and technology through an expansive lens. Centered on process-based artistic practices such as field research, interviews, and workshops, the project aims to examine the loss of community and fragmented memories rooted in historical tragedies within each culture. This phase focuses on visiting each other's cultures, fostering long-term dialogue to build trust, and laying the groundwork for a website and exhibition to be developed in two years.

Participants

Studio S2 (KOR)

Studio S2, led by Sojin Kwak with active members Gyeol Ko and Eugene Hanna Park, is a collective that began with video production and archiving, exploring themes such as Asia, colonialism, gender, and history. The studio has collaborated with creators from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia. Since 2023, it has been addressing the embodied history of migration through the Madang Theater Project and planning a networking program for young creators. Under the concept of "Hybrid Hope," Studio S2 examines Asia through specific places, people, and objects, emphasizing field trips and encounters as central to its identity.

Mythical Mode (IDN)

Mythical Mode is an Indonesian collective of curators and media artists exploring games, internet culture, history, digital technology, and traditional wisdom. Founded in 2020 by Bod Edrian and Jeffi Manzini, the group later welcomed Gesyada Siregar and William Samosir. In 2023, they addressed European museum collections in a British Council-supported program and conducted research on terraforming in collaboration with Gudskul and Failed Architecture. They also presented works on historical futurism using digital rendering and machine learning and co-curated the Instrumental Media Art Festival. The collective investigates the interplay between art, gaming culture, and media technology, as well as the boundaries between the scientific, magical, and artistic.
